7 Signs you’re out of Alignment with your purpose

Something feels off, but what could it be?

You have a steady income, working a full-time 9-5. You have a place to live. You have a car. All the societal boxes are checked, yet you can’t quite place the feeling that something is missing. The nagging feeling that arises from within you with an unknown origin and no explanation.

It can sometimes be confused with a lack of gratitude.

Being out of alignment often shows up in similar ways across individuals.

It may not always be obvious, but there are consistent signs that can help you identify it.

A few signs that you are out of alignment with your purpose:

• Feeling that something is missing despite things in life going right (being employed, housed, in a relationship)

• Functioning on autopilot while lacking purpose in your day-to-day life

• Being immersed in activities that keep you constantly distracted and/or busy

• Feeling drained with no clear explanation (you sleep 8 hours or more, your lifestyle is not overly active, you go to bed at a consistent time, and have a routine)

• Forcing decisions (e.g., going to a job you don’t enjoy to pay the bills; saying “yes” when you really want to say “no”)

• A lack of direction

• Emotional exhaustion

For me, it was all of these things.

I noticed upon waking from sleep, I would have this inner dread about going to work. It wasn’t that I hated my job. I enjoyed helping people and the interactions. I dreaded the workplace environment.

I felt drained before I even started the day. The unnecessary drama at work would drain me further if I couldn’t avoid it like the plague. Being surrounded by either condescending physicians or the support staff seeking contact validation put me in a strange position- where I didn‘t fit into either category.

It’s no wonder I felt out of alignment with my purpose.

For me, it was going to a workplace that didn’t align with my beliefs, values, or who I was as a person- and one that didn’t care to.

Combined with the feeling I had the moment I woke up, I knew something was off.

I’m out of alignment with my purpose, now what?

Awareness is the first step—but it’s not the only step.

Many people become aware that something feels off, but stay in the same patterns because they don’t know what to do next. Without intentional change, that feeling of disconnection doesn’t go away—it becomes your normal.

Realignment doesn’t require you to have everything figured out. It starts with small, honest shifts—slowing down, paying attention to what feels off, and making decisions that align with who you are and what matters to you.

This process takes time, reflection, and often support. Not because you’re incapable, but because navigating change, uncertainty, and identity shifts isn’t something most people are taught how to do on their own.

If you’ve been feeling this way, you’re not alone—and more importantly, you don’t have to stay there.
